Conrad is survived by his daughters Virginia and Vivienne (B.J.). He was a proud grandpa to his 6 grandchildren: Victor, Patricia, Kimberley, Nubia, Slade, and Kojacques. Uncle Conrad was and is a fav of mine. He was able to stand up to my dad and to me that made him superhuman. I will miss his laugh, and his wisdom. I am so thankful I have his music. May the grieving we all feel be mixed with the sweet tender memories

While living in Guyana South America, I referred to Uncle Conrad as my “play Uncle.” He and Aunt Kathleen would take me to his singing engagements and competitions as the Lead Singer of the Debonaires. As a teenager, I was thrilled and privileged to share his entertainment world. When I came to the U.S.A., we maintained our close relationship because my mother and other family members lived in Canada. As a result, each time I visited Canada (and there were several trips), I connected with Uncle Conrad. He introduced me to Toronto’s Ali’s Roti Shop and their specialties which were delightful. Uncle Conrad sang at my wedding in June 2007 prior to his initial illness. The DVD recording of his voice is etched in my memory. I will forever cherish all of the memories I shared with my uncle. He will always be close to my heart.

Lovingly,
Jacqueline Perry née Griffith

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Conrad, whom I knew, after I joined the Toronto branch of the Queen’s College alumni organization.

Conrad religiously attended all the meetings even when the venues changed from downtown to the north in Scarborough. It was a long trek for him coming from Guelph but I suspected that most times he was in Toronto on business and then he detoured to the Alumni meetings. He would come to the alumni meetings with his VW van which was always filled with stuff -odds and ends of old photocopy machines. The meetings ended late, and because of the long distance he would reach home after midnight. He had a huge heart, one time he had to detour out of the way to give a ride to a member who lived in Vaughn.

He was a fixture at all the Father’s Day brunches, initially the only entertainer. At the events, he would be like a modern-day minstrel with his speaker box, playback music, swaying behind the microphone stand. He sang mostly Motown songs faithfully choreographing the movements as we remember them. Sometimes, at the events, he had to give way to other entertainers but he would always come back when there was no one to fill the void.

The Motown songs were a testament to the irrepressible spirit of the people who fled the oppression in the south to labour in the industrial part of America, where they invented a new form of music, which was very popular in Guyana. Conrad in performing it at the last lap lime and at the brunches, brought back a piece of memory of some of the happier times in the country we left.

As he ends his journey here and begins another one, we can interpret it in the words of a song he loved to sing:

… who is taking you home
And in whose arms you gonna be…

We will miss you dearly for your enthusiasm, your love of life and how it infected all of us.
