It is with great sadness we announce that Thom lost his battle with cancer on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the age of 45. Loving partner to Jeffrey Donald. Cherished son of Francis and Carol Ann Ryan. Beloved brother of Jane (David) Champagne, Marianne (Stewart) Cameron, John (Beatrice) Ryan, Veronica (John) Yetman, Richard (Ingrid) Ryan, and Patience (Jason) Cathcart. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. Thom was a great lover of the outdoors. He was an amazingly kind and generous person and he will be deeply missed. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family invite you to join them in a gathering of celebration and remembrance of Thom’s life on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations made to your local hospice would be appreciated by the family.

My wife, Barbara Campbell, and I are deeply saddened by Thom’s passing. A vibrant life who has given so much, ended too soon. But his impact has cut a wider swath than many who have enjoyed more years. Though always being modest, Thom was an exceptionally vibrant personality who consistently exceeded limits and broke barriers. He had an inner reserve of commitment – and ever growing poise and confidence – which was reflected as he successfully took on society’s, his own and life’s challenges.

My observations come from working with Thom at Canada’s Technology Inc (CTT Inc), the pioneering Waterloo Region public-private economic development partnership mandated at that time to promote the Region to the world. Thom emerged as the lead staff member at CTT Inc in 2002 as the Board of Directors was handling a CEO transition which led to my arrival in September. As it happened, I first met Thom in April of 2002 while I was in my prior role as Canadian Consul General in Detroit. CTT Inc, with Thom as its spokesperson, had been invited to be a full half-hour guest on the prominent Detroit talk-radio station WJR as part of CTT Inc’s participation in the prestigious Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Show. Thom invited me to part of the interview, but I soon realized Thom was totally capable of making a strong and enticing case for Waterloo Region and for Ontario and Canada too! Subsequently, a matter of some weeks later, independent from this encounter, I become a candidate and joined Canada’s Technology Triangle as CEO. By the time of my arrival, Thom had already mastered the full range of duties at CTT Inc. Thom continued to show that he capable of taking on nearly anything – ambidextrous, quick to learn, insightful, a problem-solver, personable, and able to relate positively with others. CTT Inc continued to benefit from these vital skills for the remainder of the time he was part of the team. His departure was a loss to CTT Inc but his contribution to the community continued to grow.

This is my modest slice of Thom’s exceptional and wider contribution to our community, but it is one that is memorable and especially valued. It is marvellous to see how universally, Thom had an immense impact in his all too short time with us. Thom is a person who has made a difference.

Our condolences to Jeff, the family and the many who feel this loss.

John Tennant, Kitchener

Thom, a gentle, caring compassionate old soul kind of guy whom I am forever grateful for his support and effort to help me face and resolve the loss of my brother Jason. I was proud to know Thom as the most upstanding man of good character and integrity I have known. Stacy Bock

Unwavering courage, boundless devotion, infinite love - Thomas Ryan left a lasting imprint on everyone he met.

Even when facing a devastating illness, the love he held for his partner and family kept him positive and fearless to his last breath. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew and loved him. He remains a unique and shining soul, destined to light the heavens for eternity.

Our heartfelt sympathies to Thom's devoted partner Jeffrey, to Thom's large and loving family, and his vast array of friends. We send our love and support at this difficult time.

Donations have been made in Thom's name to both the Northern Ireland Hospice and Marie Curie Cancer Services, and - in keeping wth Thom's deep love of nature - a Memorial tree will be planted in his memory by the Canadian Institute of Forestry.

Mary, Queen of Gaels pray for him.

Love and Condolences from John McLoughlin and Sherry O'Brien, in Belfast
