I would like to express how sorry my husband Bob and I are to hear on the passing of Colleen. We met Colleen and Phil in Mexico in Sept last year. It amazed me on how much fun she had on a trip, how many people she got to know, she knew everyone lol. It made our trip so special to get to know a bunch of different people, it all came down to Colleen and Phil and how much fun they had. I posted one picture of some of us enjoying our trip. Our deepest condolence to the whole family.

There’s something special about having a cousin the same age as you. Even if you don’t see each other a lot, you’re still experiencing significant milestones together, in a kind of way. Your mothers are pregnant together. 😀 You’re both in the same grade, so First Communion, leaving primary years behind, Confirmation and the exciting high school years are all part us of a shared experience. At events, even if only the occasional wedding or family picnic, it’s never hard to find something to talk about. In most recent memory, when Colleen became a Facebook friend. I remember it was unlike people who add you without any comment—you’re just another name on a long list. Colleen went beyond that. She thanked me. She said it was “great to be your friend again” because years had gone by without a lot of contact. Colleen added, “I’m lucky to have so many cousins. I’m lucky to have you for a cousin, Caroline.” Doesn’t that completely sum up Colleen? It says far more about her than me. It tells us how much she valued people, not just family, and that she was much more interested in reaching out to others than living in her own world. I’m as heartbroken as anyone that she’s gone but think of Colleen and you can’t help but see the ever present smile on her face, and hear the chuckle in her throat as she always found a reason to laugh, to be happy. And naturally that happiness spread to everyone around her. That’s a pretty wonderful legacy to leave behind. We may shed tears but we can also share joy because each of us was blessed to know her. Thinking of Colleen reminded me of an old song from the late 80s called “Think of Laura”. Anyone remember it? It’s a bit syrupy, full of sentiment actually, but we could just as easily substitute Colleen’s name for Laura’s for the lyrics describe Colleen perfectly. “Friend of a friend, friends to the end. That’s the kind of girl she was. Taken away so young. Taken away without a warning. ...Hey Colleen, where are you now? Are you far away from here? I don’t think so. I think you’re near. Taking our tears away.” Colleen was indeed full of life—she’s never, ever going to be far from us.
