Christina Gold (Paterson) Ruston died peacefully at 4:35 a.m. on Monday, December 17, 2018, at the age of 102 years 7.5 months. She died at Hilltop Manor LTC in Cambridge where she had resided since July 24, 2018.
Christina’s family emigrated from Scotland in 1913, and she was the only member of her family born in Canada. She was born on May 3, 1916, in Walkerville, Ontario, and lived in the Walkerville/Windsor area until 1997 when she moved to St. Luke’s Place in Cambridge to be closer to her daughter’s family.
She was the last surviving member of her family of origin. She was predeceased by her mother Agnes (1927), her father Alexander (1945) and her three siblings: Nancy Leigh (Joe) in 2005, Anne Mills (Harold) in 2004 and Alec (Mary Irene) in 1988.
She is survived by her son Gregg of Decker, Michigan, and her daughter Margaret Hunsberger (husband Bob) of Breslau; 2 grandchildren: Kirsten Hunsberger-Shortt (Jeff) of Drayton and Kyle Hunsberger (Meredith Grant) of Guelph; and 3 great-grandchildren: Chase and Tate Shortt and Daphne Hunsberger.
Christina shared with her son a great interest in and knowledge about politics and current events. She was also very concerned about issues of women’s rights. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the piano until her eyesight deteriorated, and she was no longer able to enjoy those hobbies. She always had a keen interest in and cared deeply for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren following their activities and interests right up to her last days.
At Christina’s request, cremation has taken place. There will be a private family gathering when her ashes are interred in her family’s plot at Windsor Grove Cemetery in Windsor, Ontario.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in Christina’s memory is asked to donate to The Salvation Army.
Mission accomplished, Mom.
